Phil Wainman Story - Interview by Iain McNay - 2015
Phil produced all the early Sweet hits right from 'Funny Funny' and 'Co-Co' through to 'Ballroom Blitz' and 'Teenage Rampage' before going on to produce 'Bye Bye Baby' and 'Give a Little Love' for the Bay City Rollers which were both No 1's. He originally played drums in the 'The Paramounts' in 1965 before forming his own band, 'The Phil Wainman Set'. He secured a residency at Dolly's Club and after meeting Island's Chris Blackwell was offered the job of backing Jimmy Cliff. He started writing songs and co-wrote 'Little Games' for the' Yardbirds'. After the Bay City Rollers he produced Alex Harvey's 'Next' album. His greatest chart success, however, was the production of 'I Don't Like Mondays' by the Boomtown Rats. He also worked with Billy Idol and Adrian Gurvitz. In this interview Phil tells his story with many fascinating anecdotes and helps provide an insight into why he and the artists he worked with became so successful.

Met Phil Wainman in forest hill studio lecture. He picked me out and gave his card. Went to meet him in Eutopia village. He could not believe the demo i played him and offered the band a publishing deal. Unfortunately the band had other ideas and did not act on it. Sorry o never got tp work with him he was a straight talking person whom was easy to get on with. This was around 1985.

Tony Banks, your album *Still* - still rates my fave of your solos. You write so well with both Nik Kershaw and Derek (Fish) Dick. All four of those songs are most remarkable. And these two singers/co-writers' vocals are phenomenal fits. 'Still' baffled over there not being a hit single from the album. I'd like to see the three of you in a new group, perhaps with Janey Klimek. (Toyah?). Would love to see you get back into prog/pop, and keyboards, lovely as your orchestral work is.

Great producer. How did you get those drum sounds on The Sweet's Ballroom Blitz. Fell in love with it as a boy and it's stood out all these years as a great production.

Multiple layered, like they did with the vocals. Mike Meander used that technique earlier on with the Glitter Sound. A drummer can never play a song exactly the same, twice; that's how you achieve that specific sound. Mick Tucker was a great drummer btw!

I wonder if Genesis had a concert for charity with both Phil and Pete and Steve showing up, whether Ant could be persuaded to come out at least for one song.

He has said that he couldn't even go to Genesis concerts as a member of the AUDIENCE. He does have a couple of videos where you can see him play. But I think that ship has sailed. Apparantly he couldn't even be persuaded at the concerts Genesis gave just for their manager.

What does he mean 'it hadn't bitten either". It was huge in BELGIUM. So they should have simply moved to Belgium. And sung and written in ....belgian? Is that a language? Sorry to the belgians. Its odd and interesting that Mr. Phillips can't remember how they made the decision to go on the road because ALL the other guys point the finger directly at him as being 'the guy' who wanted to go on the road, and loved being on stage. So is it self deprecating to try to evade the 'responsibility' or is it humbleness that doesn't want to say "yeah Genesis wouldn't exist now if it weren't for me".

l loved that song, but right at 48 25 the producer part of me thinks that should have been a bass instead of keyboards, and the percussion a little louder. And Anthony always seems a little shy with his vocals, but its a good voice, but as Peter said, 'a bit thin'. LIke playing, ya gotta really stretch it out in there.

I have mused about the great Blind Faith that could have been---with Bruce (instead of Ric Grech) and the rest of the lineup. The biggest disappointment with Blind Faith was the songwriting. I saw their US tour (in Aug 1969) and the first album (only album) was so weak that the concert's song list was forced to rely on Cream songs recycled to include Winwood. A Traffic song or two was included for some of the shows. Instead imagine Winwood and Bruce teaming up to create songs!
